WEIGHT LOSS AND MONEY: HOW CUTTING CALORIES WILL CUT YOUR FOOD COSTS
You've decided to flip to get control of your weight. You believe in your ability; you visualize yourself leaner and more attractive; you determined that, yes, you do have the time to exercise and make better food choices; and you realize that your energy level will improve. Did you know that flipping can actually save you money? Obviously, eating less will help you to save money. If you stop and count all the things you eat throughout the day, you may identify quite a bit of money spent on a doughnut here or a Danish there plus all those "designer" coffee drinks. All of these treats add up. You will also save money when it comes to the sheer quantity of food eaten. When you cut down on calories, you will see your grocery bills decreasing. You will start ordering less in restaurants and opt for an appetizer and a salad rather than a big expensive entree. All of these points will help you to save money. In addition, when you plan what you are going to eat you are less apt to get caught hungry in an environment where expensive food is the only option or at the supermarket with a bagful of expensive, ready-to-eat, high-calorie, high-fat foods that you had never planned to buy in the first place.
You may spend more money on some foods, such as increased amounts of fresh produce. But if you stay in season and don't purchase extravagant berries or exotic high-priced fruits, you won't notice a cost increase. And keep in mind, you are probably going to be purchasing less food overall.
I buy huge quantities of frozen fruits and vegetables. They are easy to buy in bulk, frequently on sale, and they rarely spoil. Case studies conclusively demonstrate that many frozen fruits and vegetables retain even more vitamins and nutrients than fresh. Don't feel you 'are losing any of the benefits of fruits and vegetables by opting for frozen, which can prove to be a less expensive alternative to fresh. However, try to avoid canned vegetables, even if you are lured by the prices, as they are generally loaded with sodium. If you do buy them, make sure to rinse them off before eating them to minimize the sodium content.
